If you’re one of those people who think music was better “back in your day” . . . well, you might not just be an old curmudgeon. There’s SCIENCE to back you up.
Researchers at Sapienza University in Rome took thousands of songs from six genres: Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, and Electronic . . . and examined them from their beginnings until the present day.
And what they found is that the music in all six genres has become significantly SIMPLER over the years. Yes, even Classical and Jazz.
And it probably has a lot to do with the fact that technology has made it so that pretty much anybody can make music.
The study says, quote, “The democratization of the composition process and the advent of new technologies and platforms have fostered the development of genres characterized by reduced complexity relative to earlier eras.”
Or, to put it another way . . . those beats you made on your laptop last night are nowhere near as good as you think they are.
