Here’s a question that’s trending on social: “Where are you REALLY from?” The TikTok show SubwayTakes talked to a New Yorker who said you can’t claim you’re “from” New York unless you were BORN in New York.
It’s a debate New Yorkers have had for a long time. The classic line is you’re not a “New Yorker” until you’ve been there at least 10 years.
But does it apply to other places too? And is the guy in the video right? Can you only say you’re “from” L.A., Chicago, or Minneapolis if you were born there?

(It depends on context, right? If you’re talking to someone in your own city, you wouldn’t say you’re “from” there unless you were born there. But if you’re in Belgium, saying you’re “from” where you live makes sense.)
