Science has spoken: taking a trip to the bathroom might be the key to mental clarity. Researchers found that relieving yourself before tackling mental tests can actually boost cognitive performance.
This is no bathroom humor—well, okay, maybe it is. But the study suggests that the gut-brain connection is real, and nothing clears your mind like clearing your bowels. So, the next time you’re stuck on a problem, maybe skip the brainstorming and hit the porcelain throne. Your brain (and your gut) will thank you.
The study looked at both athletic performance where quick decision-making is necessary . . . and straightforward brain teasers, like being shown flashcards with the word “red” written in green ink, and being asked to quickly name the color.
It was a small-scale study, but 100% of the participants performed better after having a laxative-induced bowel movement, and most of them did better after having a natural Number Two.
The researchers believe “pooping gives your body more energy to spend on cognition and exercise intensity.” And they recommend pooping 60 to 90 minutes before a big event for better, faster, and smarter decision-making.
So bosses: Maybe you should ENCOURAGE employees to hit the bathroom at work . . . right after clocking in.
Do you feel sharper after a bathroom break? Share your thoughts—or flush them out—in the comments. Let’s settle this: does pooping really improve brainpower?
