It’s mid-April, so: How COOKED are you? Not because Tax Day is next week . . . because TOMORROW is National Grilled Cheese Day.
In a new poll, 70% of people say they prefer the “toast-level” of their grilled cheese to be “golden brown.” 12% like it well-done or even burnt. (That’s even more popular in the Northeastern U.S.)
Maybe you’re not that picky about it, but KIDS sure are. 30% of parents say they’ve had to remake a grilled cheese for their child who wasn’t happy with the toast level. (Which seems low. Maybe some parents flat-out REFUSE.)
As for the sandwich, 47% are “purists” who just want bread and cheese . . . especially Midwestern women. Men from the Northeast are the most likely to experiment with extras, like tomato, fresh herbs, bacon, or sautéed onions and spinach. (At some point, most people would consider it a “melt.”)
American cheese is the most popular cheese, followed by cheddar, mozzarella, and Swiss. Men are more likely to spice it up with habanero jack or pepper jack.
65% of people say they spread a little butter on the outside, especially in the Midwest. Younger adults like to put MAYO on a grilled cheese . . . 28 spread it on the inside, and 14% spread it on the outside.
If you’re ordering a grilled cheese tomorrow, what ONE customization would you request?
