Anheuser-Busch Wants You to Call Their Beer “American” Not “Domestic”

Anheuser-Busch wants stores and restaurants to stop using the term “domestic beer,” and start saying “American beer” instead. Their CEO sent a memo to distributors, arguing that “American” is a much stronger adjective.

If we’re going with “Gulf of America,” (of which we fully approve) we guess there’s no reason we wouldn’t do this too:  The CEO of Anheuser-Busch wants you to stop calling their beer a “domestic,” and start calling it “American” beer instead.

Budweiser already uses the slogan “great American lager.”  But he wants stores and restaurants to stop using “domestic” for ANY beer made in the U.S.

He sent a memo to distributors, encouraging them to start using the term “American beer.”  Quote, “It’s about time the whole industry begins to unilaterally use one of the strongest adjectives available to us:  American.”  He said “domestic” should be reserved for “less glamorous” things.

He conceded that “domestic” is accurate too, but argued it doesn’t fully capture the, quote, “spirit and passion that’s intrinsic to the American beer industry.”

Anheuser-Busch lost a ton of business to the Bud Light boycott in 2023.  So winning those people back might have something to do with it.
